SCED 330/435 Blog
Week 1.

The semester has just started and I'm really excited about starting clinical. I've already met with my instructor and we've talked about the curriculum for the school year. We also discussed how important it is to establish trust and a rapport with your students in the first two weeks. I brought up the schools policy on disciplining students. Mrs. Harris explained that last semester she had little trouble with last years class. She had told me that she just had to use "The Look." After making eye contact with her students, the majority of them fell into place. The school does have a procedure for when "The Look" fails. They call it Bounce. Bounce is used when a student and a teacher can not come to a civil agreement. This procedure removes the student from his/her classroom and places them into a neighboring class. This often works because it removes them from the environment they were acting out in.  It also allows the teacher the opportunity to take a breath refocus on the class. The student will usually return after several minutes. If there is no class available for the student to go to, then they may be asked to take a seat in class and write a brief reflection. After our discussion Mrs. Harris provided me with the N.B. Mills Elementary School staff handbook, safe school plan handbook, and the school calendar. We then reviewed both handbooks and looked over the calendar to see which days I could assist her. I will return to her class for the first day of school to introduce herself.  I told her I'm excited about teaching this semester. I cant wait to teach about the solar system. I've always been fascinated with astronomy. I  love the planets, stars, and even black holes. I plan to use a couple videos and a virtual planet app. She said she's very interested in seeing the virtual planet app. We then discussed some of the other subjects I'll be teaching such as math and literacy. She has a program that she follows for literacy and will introduce me to it next week.

This week in SCED330 we discussed our clinical, projects, and other responsibilities. I must admit its a bit overwhelming. I'm hoping I can manage balancing work, home, and school. I'm trying to create a schedule to follow to help keep up with assignments and chores at home. Also, this week we had our first collaborative science project meeting via Zoom. I discussed several ideas with my classmates that we could do for experiments. Hopefully, we choose something soon so we can start as soon as possible. One of my favorite parts of the class is Twitter. I've tweeted about the solar eclipse, science and literacy, and my favorite an infographic. The infographic is about the scientific method and it is really funny. It makes it easy to remember the phases of scientific method. Check out my tweets CSTeach1on the sced330.

  1. Chris,

It sounds as if you have already gotten a wonderful head start on engaging with your school and clinical educator. That is wonderful way to start off the year. Bounce is an interesting concept. I like how it allows both the student and teacher to have a break from the situation.

  2. Chris,

I loved hearing about your school's discipline action plan. I have never liked the idea of ISS of Chill Out (as they tend to call it in Cleveland County schools). I feel that it interfers to much with the student's learning. I love the idea of Bounce. The student still recieves important instruction time while being removed from a problematic environment. This is great! However, I am interested to learn about what the next step is should bounce not work.

  3. Hi Chris,
I can understand about being overwelmed. There is so much information to take in when a school semester starts. I can see you already have a jumpstart on taking your information seriously by asking your CE all kinds of questions.
Thank you for sharing the virtual planet app. I never have seen that app. Like you, I have always been interested in stars, the space, and planets.
My CE shared with me this week that they have a new phonics program called Letterland. Each letter is represented by character such as Annie Apple for the letter A. You might want to check out the Letterland apps.
Please let me know if you find any other great apps.

  4. Chris,
It's great that you are already getting into your clinical and getting on top of things. I'm trying to do the same, but I also feel overwhelmed. The kindergarteners are starting on Tuesday, so I'll get to meet them then. I'm incredibly nervous but I know it will be a good learning experience.
I am excited about this semester and working in science methods. The solar system has always fascinated me, too, especially learning about the constellations! A virtual planet app would be great to utilize in your lesson. I wish technology would have been this developed when I was going through elementary school.
    Have a great week!

  5. Chris, I'm glad you've had the opportunity to get to meet your CE and get so much info from her already. Bounce seems very interesting and I especially like that it includes a self reflection piece for the student. It also gives the teacher time to regroup and refocus while their is still instruction time going on. Can't wait to hear updates on how this works throughout the semester as you observe more. Best of luck this semester!

  6. Chris,
I am glad we have the opportunity to work together again. Thank you for a strong beginning to the new semester. You CAN do this...you have already described the secret to getting it all done...planning ahead! Keep on being invested in your clinical setting so you can apply the concepts you are learning.

  7. Chris, I'm glad that you have gotten to become so involved in your school in such a short amount of time! Bounce is definitely a very interesting method, CMS schools also use the same method and say that it works wonders most of the time. Goodluck in your placement this week!!
